In Memoriam: Professor Dr. Gunther von Hagens (1945–2026)
It is with profound sadness that the International Society for Plastination (ISP) announces the passing of Professor Dr. Gunther von Hagens, the inventor of plastination and one of the founder members of our Society.
Professor von Hagens transformed the field of anatomy through a revolutionary technique that has profoundly influenced anatomical education, scientific research, and the preservation of biological specimens worldwide. His vision, innovation, and unwavering dedication established plastination as an indispensable tool for generations of anatomists, educators, and researchers.
Beyond his extraordinary scientific achievements, Professor von Hagens was a mentor, colleague, and source of inspiration to countless members of our international community. His generosity in sharing knowledge, his commitment to scientific excellence, and his remarkable strength and determination throughout the years following the announcement of his illness reflected the same perseverance that characterized his life's work.
The International Society for Plastination extends its deepest condolences to Dr. Angelina Whalley, Rurik von Hagens, their family, Dr. Vladimir Chereminskiy and Rebecca Brewer, who were among Professor von Hagens' closest collaborators, and to all those whose lives were touched by Professor von Hagens. We share in their grief and express our sincere gratitude for the extraordinary legacy he leaves to science and to our Society.
As we approach the 50th Anniversary of the invention of Plastination in 2027, we are reminded that Professor von Hagens' vision forever changed the way anatomy is studied, taught, and understood. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of anatomists and plastinators around the world.
On behalf of the International Society for Plastination, we express our deepest respect and gratitude for the life and work of Professor Dr. Gunther von Hagens. His contributions will endure through the countless professionals he inspired and through the continued advancement of plastination worldwide.
Rest in peace, Professor von Hagens. Your legacy will live on.
